Early Years

Jennifer Lynn Lopez was born to Puerto Rican parents Guadalupe (a kindergarten teacher) and David, a computer specialist. Lopez and her two sisters grew up in a small apartment where their mother encouraged them to entertain each other with theatrical performances in the front room .Lopez spent her entire academic career in Catholic schools, finishing at the all-girls Preston High School, in the Bronx. In 1984, at the age of fifteen, she began dating David Cruz, her first boyfriend. She financed singing and dancing lessons for herself from the age of 19. Lopez made her first film appearance in the small role of Myra in My Little Girl in 1986. She secured her first steady acting role in 1988 when she embarked on a five-month European tour of a live stage production called Golden Musicals of Broadway. In 1990, she won a national competition and earned a spot dancing on the popular Fox comedy television series, "In Living Color," as one of the "Fly Girls." A series of small acting jobs followed, including parts in two more series and a TV movie, Nurses on the Line: The Crash of Flight 7, in 1993. Her first screen role was in the made-for-TV-series ‘Nurses’ on the line ‘The Crash of Flight 7’, followed by a first-time film role in the drama ‘My Family’ in 1995 and ‘Money Train’ in the same year. Starring with Robin Williams in Francis Ford Coppola's comedy drama ‘Jack’ (1996) propelled Lopez further up the A-list ladder. 1997 was a successful year for Lopez both personally and professionally). She came a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress for her turn in the film ‘Selena’.

Singing and Acting

In May 1999 Lopez released her first debut single, "If You Had My Love", as she began to ready her first album. Lopez became the first artist to top the Billboard Hot 100 with their debut single since Britney Spears did so with her single, "...Baby One More Time", four months prior. Early in 2000, Lopez was nominated for Best Dance Performance for her second hit single "Waiting for Tonight," but lost the award to veteran diva Cher. Also in 2000, she starred in Enough, a portrayal of spousal abuse. By 2001, not only was Lopez was able to carry a film as a leading lady; she also started her own clothing company, JLO, her own perfume line Glow, and opened the Pasadena, California-based Cuban restaurant Madre's. Following the September 11 attacks, Lopez was heavily involved in charitable activities. Joining various other artists, she was featured on charitable singles such as "What's Going On" and "El Ultimo Adios (The Last Goodbye)" which benefited people affected by the tragedy. After a year away from the music scene, Lopez released her fourth studio album, ‘Rebirth’ in 2005. Although debuting and peaking at number two in the US, the album quickly fell off the charts. Bordertown, a film based on the Female homicides in Ciudad Juárez, made its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 18, 2006. Lopez, who also acts as the film's producer, stars as Lauren Adrian, an American news reporter for the Chicago Sentinel who wants to be assigned to the Iraq front-lines to cover the war. The film received a limited release in theaters throughout Europe in 2007 and a direct-to-video release in many other countries in 2008, including the United States. Lopez gave birth to a son, Maximilian David and a daughter, Emme Maribel, in Long Island, New York on February 22, 2008.

American Idol and Successful Performances

In 2010, despite being busy with her family and both music and acting projects, Lopez decided to enter into a new phase in her career: she announced her plans to replace Ellen DeGeneres as the new female judge on the tenth season of American Idol, which had also just welcomed Aerosmith's Steven Tyler as part of its celebrity judge panel. In January 2012, Lopez returned as judge on the eleventh season of American Idol, earning a reported $20 million. On January 25, 2013 Lopez starred alongside Jason Statham as Leslie in the crime thriller Parker. Her performance was positively reviewed, with The Chicago Tribune commending the role for giving Lopez "an opportunity to be dramatic, romantic, funny, depressed, euphoric and violent. Later that June, Lopez performed at the birthday of Turkmenistan President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov. Doing so, she garnered widespread backlash for performing for the leader of a "repressive, authoritarian regime", with the Human Rights Foundation expressing disappointment. The public also expressed their fury with a number of posts on social media. She is the richest person of Latin American descent in Hollywood according to Forbes, and the most influential Hispanic entertainer in the U.S. according to People en Espa?ols list of "100 Most Influential Hispanics".

Personal Life

At the age of fifteen, she began dating David Cruz, her first boyfriend. In 1997 she met OjaniNoa, a waiter at a Miami restaurant. At the wrap party for 'Selena', Noa grabbed the microphone and offered a Lopez a diamond ring in the middle of the dance floor. Lopez accepted and the pair married the same year but was divorced by January 1998. It was during the making of her first album that Lopez was to meet Sean Combs (then known as Puff Daddy), who was helping produce the album. Their two-and-half-year relationship was splashed across the media regularly and the press feasted on one particular story which saw Lopez and Combs involved in a gunfire brawl at a New York club in December 1999. Only a month after her break up with Sean "P. Daddy" Combs, Lopez struck up a relationship with back-up dancer Cris Judd that she met on the set for her video "Love Don't Cost a Thing." The couple married in September of 2001. Seven months later they broke up and finally divorced in January of 2003. Lopez picked herself up quickly and began dating actor Ben Affleck, whom she met while filming the 2003-released Gigli together. The relationship spawned publicity off the scale, with the pair being re-named ‘Bennifer’ and Affleck even appearing in her music video for the single ‘Jenny from the Block’, which was taken from her third studio album, ‘This is me…then’. While Lopez saw over $300 million in sales in 2004 on her clothing line alone, her entrepreneurial ventures didn't get in the way of her recording a new record. Following her break-up with Affleck in January 2004, Lopez began dating long-time friend Marc Anthony. The couple wed that June. . In July 2011, the couple announced their split, with Anthony filing for divorce in April 2012. Since October 2011, Lopez has been in a relationship with her former back-up dancer Casper Smart. She was named as the most beautiful woman in the world by People magazine in 2011.

At the age of five, Lopez began taking singing and dancing lessons. She toured New York with her school when she was seven years old. Lopez spent her entire academic career in Catholic schools, finishing at Preston High School.

Quotes and Memoirs:

I only do what my gut tells me to. I think it's smart to listen to other people's advice, but at the end of the day, you’re the only one who can tell you what's right for you.
I grew up in the Bronx where you would stay up late with your girlfriends, just being silly in our bedrooms, whatever. And I was always the clown.
I can only speak for myself, and hope people hear my words and see me on television speaking for myself. And, hopefully, they'll be able to make their own judgment. And at the end of the day, I just want my work to speak for itself.
The bottom line is that musicians love to makemusic and always will.
It's a shame to call somebody a 'diva' simply becausethey work harder than everybody else.
When you have children, you realise you can't plan anything. There's no Plan A, no Plan B. Life will happen and you will go with it.
I just think that the whole diva thing is a misrepresentation of who I am.
I am a lover. And with my kids I am even softer. I realize with my son, I have to sometimes be tough, especially now when he's pushing boundaries. With my daughter, I can get a little stern with her and she pretty much will listen.
I feel I want to grow as an actress and be better. I want to progress as a singer and songwriter, and produce movies and everything. So there'll be no time when I feelI've done it all.
